Contrary to the ODF (Oral Dissolvable Films) the Muccoadhesive Buccal Films (MBF) are buccally applied and thus the API is directly released through the mucosa into the body. Due to the excellent blood circulation of the mucosa the API will go immediately into the bloodstream avoiding the first pass effect.
The mostly multilayer films are placed on the inside of the cheek and for this reason have often round corners to ensure a better mouth feeling.
In general MBF are used for higher dosages and different APIs than classic Oral Films.

Packaging solutions
Final packaging of the individual Buccal Film provides safe use and protecting until the point of use with respect to the dissolvable polymer matrix behaviours. Typically packaging elements like humidity, choice of packaging material, packaging design and appropriate opening features combined with intuitive handling are key elements to consider.
The final products normally are pouched in a four-side-sealed pouch or sachet with or without child resistance (CR) features in different shapes and in various execution.
